I agree with Alex wholeheartedly.

Furthermore, I don't agree with the notion that there are motives other than cost that are preventing NYC subways from wireless phone [and other] services.

Outside of Manhattan, the majority of subway route miles do not run underground, and 40% of subway stations are not underground either. People do use their cellphones on the subway and New Yorkers are not rioting in the streets as a result. [I am fully aware that a large percentage of subway ridership takes place underground, but there is a nice chunk that does not.]

The MTA has focused its capital spending on maintenance rather than infrastructure, as was so vividly brought to light when the signal relay room on Chambers street was destroyed by fire. I am not suggesting that any specific agency or government official is at fault here, this is completely outside the scope of our forum, but needless to say, infrastructure projects are not plentiful.

Perhaps it would be wise for the MTA to strike a deal with a wireless carrier or two, to bring coverage to stations and perhaps subway tunnels. This could be a source of welcome revenue.

I agree, installing today's cellular system in subways is a bad idea.
Think about amount of radiaton you'll expose people in. All cars have
metallic case, it won't work well unless you install a device within

*plonk* Cars are not faraday cages. If they were, you wouldn't get reception in above-ground subway.

each, or unless you fry people into mutants. Would you want a cellular
base station installed in your room? Little exaggerated, but not far
from reality.

Yes, very far from reality. You are very welcome to wear tinfoil hats while riding subway.

Unless very low power, higher capacity wireless communication
technologies are used, I'm against it. As a start, wifi can be used for
internet access, delay tolerant messaging, and everyone will benefit p2p
technologies.

Nothing a tinfoil hat with built-in soothing music-playing headphones can't solve for you.

I believe, majority of people would prefer private messaging in public
places, if they have the option. Finally, nobody would tolerate the
Lombard effect.

Majority of people can't tell their head from their ass. That's no argument.
