BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON SANDHILL CRANE BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER WHIMBREL BLACK TERN COMMON NIGHTHAWK BAIRD’S SANDPIPER STILT SANDPIPER AMERICAN AVOCET WHIMBREL LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL RUDDY TURNSTONE BROWN PELICAN Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 8/20: 11 species of shorebirds were seen at May’s Point Pool highlighted by STILT SANDPIPER, BAIRD’S SANDPIPER and AMERICAN AVOCET. The AVOCET was seen as recently as the 23rd. (yesterday) but as yet no report of it today. Two more shorebirds, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER and SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER were found later in the week bringing the May’s Point Pool count up to 13 shorebird species. 8/23: 2 SANDHILL CRANES were seen flying over the main pool. Onondaga County ------------ 8/19: A BROWN PELICAN was seen and photographed on Eagle Creek near Fourth Lake in the Adirondack Park. There have been no recent reports. 8/20: 5 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen in Syracuse near the Temple Adath Yeshuran Cemetary. 8/22: 7 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen flying over the Radisson Community near Baldwinsville. Also heard there were BARRED and SCREETCH OWLS. 8/23: 5 of the commoner species of shorebirds and a possible pair of Baird’s Sandpipers were seen along Onondaga Lake. Oswego County ------------ 8/17: At Sandy Pond a 2nd. cycle LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen and at the boat launch at Greene Point Marina a juvenile BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen on the dock. 8/19: A Raptor flight at Derby Hill and points to the south produced 9 species of raptors. 8/21: At Sandy Pond 7 species of shorebirds were found. Highlights were BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER and RUDDY TURNSTONE. On the 23rd. SEMI-PAL PLOVER and BAIRD’S SANDPIPER were added to the mix. Also on that day at El Dorado up in Jefferson County 2 WHIMBREL were seen. 8/23: A single WHIMBREL was seen on the grass at the fort in Oswego.
