I went over to the air field to look over the grass lands at the air fields
for Short eared Owls, Hawks etc.over the weekend. Saw at least two
harriers and Red Tailed hawks, but no owls. I did see a flock of 6 or 7
Meadowlarks. I got pretty good looks in my scope but when I drove closer to
take
pictures I was yelled at by someone who told me I should not be on the grass.
I asked him why not,and he told me that the town of Riverhead prohibits
this because of the threat to the Salamanders in the Grasslands. I told him I
thought that salamanders inhabited wet lands and under decayed logs, but
he told me that these were his instructions, and he thought it was funny
also.
