Brent Bomkamp, Stella Miller and I birded the Towns of Easthampton and Southampton, Suffolk County, and points further west today. On Further Lane in Easthampton at about 8:30 a.m., we found 5 Greater White-Fronted Geese. A bit earlier, Brent spotted two of these birds in flocks of Canada Geese flying from nearby Hook Pond in the direction of the Further Lane field. Mecox Inlet (cut closed) produced a Semipalmated Plover. We saw 3 Cattle Egrets at the Mecox Dairy, and another 2 in Manorville, along the eastbound service road of Route 27 just west of the Route 51 intersection. Short's Pond in Scuttlehole was loaded with geese in late morning, including one "Richardson's" Cackling Goose. At Shinnecock Inlet, an immature Black-legged Kittiwake was feeding with the Bonaparte's Gull flock off the jetties, and there were about 200 Common Eiders in the area. We spotted our first Canvasback (17) of the season on Eastport Pond, and the drake Eurasian Wigeon continues on Patchogue Lake. Overall, waterfowl numbers were still quite low.
