Today was the first since the discovery of the Elegant Tern last Wednesday that it was not reported. There were a number of people out looking, both from the Canadian side and at the north end of Squaw Island. Though the tern was drooping his wings on occasion, he was video'ed yesterday preening vigorously, so he appeared to have quite a bit of life in him yet. Wonder where he will turn up next..
The LARK SPARROW in Fort Erie, Ontario was very cooperative today. It was at the same place as seen yesterday - the location was initially incorrectly given on the Ontbirds list as the corner of Highland and Niagara Parkway. The correct location is north of there, between Bowen Road and Central Ave, along the Niagara Parkway. The parkway runs right next to the Niagara River. There is a small park on the west side of the road at this location and the sparrow was seen on the ground near the paved path, which is close to the road, several times. It was also seen with House Sparrows in bushes next to the river. It has also been seen in the ornamental conifer at 769 Niagara Parkway, the house just north of the small park, where the House Sparrows often roost. There are phenomenal numbers of Bonaparte's Gulls from Buffalo/Fort Erie to the southern end of Grand Island, perhaps 25,000. Finding anything different among them is a real challenge - we couldn't do it today. The spectacle that they make when they all lift off and fly around together is truly awesome - a National Geographic moment as someone said today.
