This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of June 01, 2020 Highlights: ----------- LEAST BITTERN GREAT EGRET BLACK VULTURE PEREGRINE FALCON BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON SANDHILL CRANE RUDDY TURNSTONE RED-NECKED PHALAROPE WHIMBREL PIPING PLOVER WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER UPLAND SANDPIPER BLACK TERN WHIP-POOR-WILL COMMON NIGHTHAWK RED-HEADED WOODPECKER YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER ACADIAN FLYCATCHER PROTHONOTARY WARBLER YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT RED CROSSBILL Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 6/2: 8 shorebird species including RED-NECKED PHALAROPE and WHIMBREL were seen at the Wildlife Drive, mostly near the south end. A are for Montezuma COMMON TERN was seen also. The Phalarope was seen through the 4th. 6/3: A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen on VanDyne Spoor Road. 6/6: PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS continue at the forested area on Armitage Road. 6/7: 2 ORCHARD ORIOLES were seen on Howland Island. 5 BLACK TERNS were seen at Tschache Pool. Onondaga County ------------ 6/2: This was the last day the YELLOW BREASTED CHAT was seen at Labrador Hollow Unique Area. 6/5: ACADIAN FLYCATCHER continues in Whiskey Hollow Nature Preserve west of Baldwinsville. 6/6: Up to 50 SEMI-PALMATED SANDPIPERS and a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER were seen from the West Shore Trail of Onondaga Lake. 2 PRAIRIE WARBLERS and 2 ORCHARD ORIOLES were seen at Green Lakes state Park. A CERULEAN WARBLER was seen on Ferguson Road in the Cicero Swamp. 6/7: A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was found at Cedar Bar Park in Fayetteville. A near albino Robin was seen and photographed in New Hartford. Oswego County ------------- 6/3: 2 PIPING PLOVERS continue at the Sandy Pond Outlet on Lake Ontario. A RUDDY TURNSTONE was also seen. 2 late COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen on Hinman Road north of Pulaski. 6/4: 2 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS are still being seen at the north lookout of Derby Hill. 6/6: A PROTHONOTARY WARBLER was seen at the second channel near the fishing access site on Toad Harbor Road on Oneida Lake. They have been found here in the past but have not been reported for a number of years. 6/7: A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER and the PROTHONOTARY WARBLER were seen at the Toad Harbor site on Oneida Lake. 6/8: A WHIP-POOR-WILL was heard on Sol Davis Road in Williamstown. Cayuga County ------------ 6/3: A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was again present at Fair Haven State Park. 6/5: A PROTHONOTARY WARBLER was again seen from the barge Canal near Brutus. Madison County ------------ 6/3: An ORCHARD ORIOLE and a CERULEAN WARBLER were seen on Ditch Bank Road north of Canastota. 6/4: A FISH CROW continues on Ditchbank Road. 6/5: A SANDHILL CRANE was seen in a plowed field near the Bridgeport-Kirkville Road. 6/8: 7 RED CROSSBILLS were seen on Muller Hill Road east of Georgetown. Oneida County ------------ 6/2: A LEAST BITTERN was seen in the Utica Marsh. It was seen through the 7th. 6/3: A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was again seen at Verona Beach State Park. 6/4: A WHIP-POOR-WILL was heard at the Preston Hill Gravel Pit north of Oneida Lake. 6/6: A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen on Anderson Road in Clinton. A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen at the Shenendoah Golf Course at Turningstone. 6/8: A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen on Rt.49 east of Jewell on Oneida Lake. 2 GREAT EGRETS were seen at Utica Marsh.
