We had an interesting bird walk yesterday at NYBG. At three different locations
we found white wash and pellets in low yew trees indicating the presence of a
Saw Whet Owl. But despite the strong indication of an owl- we found nothing.
Here is the interesting factor. At all three locations an adult Cooper's hawk
was either in the yew or very close by. This is the second time we have found a
Cooper's inside of a tree that had impressive amounts of white wash. It appears
the Cooper's Hawks have discovered the Saw Whets and are preying on these tiny
owls while they roost. At one bush we found feathers, indicating a hawk kill.
