You were close, but a few problems with your regex. Try:

RewriteRule ^reviews/(.+)$ http://www.thesite.co.nz/review/$1 [R=301,L]

Sorry to clarify, you don't need the RewriteCond as Berend suggested. You may also need to add 'RewriteEngine On'.

So:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^reviews/(.+)$ http://www.thesite.co.nz/review/$1 [R=301,L]

Should do it.
