Hallo,

I have had at least 5 students robbed of their cards at the SPAR Standard Bank
ATM.

I think a sign above the ATM would do wonders, to remind all users of risk of
scammers and criminals working on this ATM. This placed above the ATM would be
a good reminder to foreigners to be alert at all times.

The most recent incident was Sunday June 8th, 10.00 AM - Allyson Erickson (USA
intern) was robbed of her VISA card. She was very upset as it happened so
quickly, again a short well dressed man, who worked in conjunction with a
second person who did the took the card while he destracted Allyson.

What is the procedure in these cases? Do we report to the police the loss of
the card and the incident.

Regards,

Barbara – Makulu Lodge

This happened to us as well and the guy was very persistent, (short well
dressed black man looked like a student) with a wad of cash in his hand. When I
told him to “go away “ he got aggressive like I was absusing him!

When I called the Spar security that was standing there he ran away.

Also happened at the Nedbank ATM on lower main..

Rather go into Spar and draw at the teller or inside St Peters Square.

Subject: [obsnw] ATM SCAM Standard Bank outside Spar

This was posted to me:

On Sunday morning, 2 Dutch girls had drawn money at the ATM outside Spar in
Station Rd. A very well dressed African man (looked like a foreigner) was
behind them. He then frantically told them to put their card in again, because
of ----- (long story, couldn't hear properly). He had a wad of cash in his
hand, was speaking to them urgently and was VERY convincing! They were starting
to hesitate, were confused, wondering. Fortunately I saw what was happening,
intercepted and told them "No, this is a scam". They then walked away and the
man disappeared. I told the Spar manager to come out and send security, he said
he would.

The young foreigners are very susceptible to this sort of thing, please be
vigilant and warn them if you see this.
