I use octave when I teach Math courses such as "numerical linear algebra" and "dynamical systems, fractals and chaos" at the University of Missouri. I plan to use it this semester when teaching "math modeling." I use Mathematica when teaching "numerical methods." In my research I use a mixture of octave and Mathematica. My collaborators use Matlab. Results of plots look superficially different (e.g. line width, colors, etc). Also I find that the ode45 command that comes with odepkg is significantly slower than the similar command in Matlab. I encourage my students to download octave rather than spend dollars on Matlab. But many of my engineering students have access to Matlab and use that instead. That is what they are taught in their engineering classes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ RSA(R) Conference 2012 Mar 27 - Feb 2 Save $400 by Jan. 27 Register now! http://p.sf.net/sfu/rsa-sfdev2dev2 _______________________________________________ Octave-dev mailing list Octave-dev@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/octave-dev
