Hi
We have a user who is reporting dismal performance on the following PII 266 128MB Win NT4 sp6a
We mentioned that the machine may be a little light for NT but there techie said.
'My experiance with NT4, is that it quite happily runs on a pentium 100 with 64 mb ram, running standard apps, and mcafee virus scan.'
What do you think?
Is the time you'll spend looking at it worth less than a new box? For 10-20 hrs, they may as well just get a new box - or if its your cost, you may as well buy them a new box - unless you get some value elsewhere for correcting this performance (maybe everyone's getting this performance, but not noticing?).
However, I'd expect NT4'd be /okay/ on that box, I've seen it performing /ok/ on less (not with sp6 (which presumably is ie 6?)) - though you wouldn't want it for your desktop.
Other than that, its purely dependent on what bottleneck you are hitting. If your app is cpu intensive the _quickest_ it can be is 5x slower than on a 1Gig box. Or are you maxing io on a slow hard-drive? Or network? Or is a forward compatible system call crap on NT and okay on 2k?
NT + McAfee may have run okay on his p100 if there was not much file writing occuring - I'd be happy running XP on a 386 as long as I never had to actually use it...
Cheers, Kurt.
