It entirely depends on the relationship you have with your boss, the type of customer and how badly you want to keep your job.

Since you should always plan to go live on Monday you actually do have the weekend to sort thing out with a substantial holiday in Fiji to pacify the family as the cost to the company.

I would (in order of increasing desperation) say:

1. No.

2. NO!

3. Put back implementation by a month.  If the specifications are not complete there’s bound to be a host of other issues that are going to be needed.

4. I’m taking sick leave NOW.

5. NO!!.

6. When I have made the existing system stable YOU can add your extra features.

7. After a positive salary review (30+%).

8. ABSOLUTELY NO!!!!

Hi guys.

Just thought I would start one of those “Friday” discussions.

As developers with many years of experience you must have had this come up many times.

Scenario:

  • You are a sole developer working your arse off to get your program finished and “unexpected feature”-less by D-day.
  • It’s the day before your software goes live.
  • Your boss comes and tells you about “changes to requirements” which means quite a few changes to your database structure and software code.
  • It’s still the day before your software goes live.
  • There is still only one of you.

I’m looking forward to learning your techniques for handling these situations.

And HAVE A GREAT FRIDAY & WEEKEND

Cheers

Tracey
