[Reply] Hi Tracey,
This highlights the problems of informality in how we deal with our clients (bosses included). Where good process is ignored, or not valued, then, as the supplier of services you will always be subjected to unreasonable demands. In this situation, the problem existed long ago. And for the boss to assume that he can make such a demand, then something is terribly wrong. OK, enough of the hassling ... what to do. 1. Communicate. Go and sit down with him, one on one, and go through where you are, what has to be done, how much resource is required to achieve "his" goals, how much resource (read time) you have, and honestly what can be achieved in the available time. If this is not successful then go and write it down and send it to him, spend time on documenting this situation, until he gets the idea. Put him on notice, and copy it to whomever else may be involved / interested. If it becomes a bun-fight at a later stage, written documents become highly important. One hint from one of my lawyers ... "whenever you write a letter, fax, or email, always re-read it before sending, on the assumption that one day it will be evidence in a court of litigation". That's saved my butt on a number of occasions. Also wait 5 minutes before sending, and re-read it ... take out any and ALL emotive language. ALWAYS come across as sensible and considered, with facts to back up any statement or position. 2. Do NOT panic. The "Shield" has already been lost to Canterbury, so what else is of such importance? <g> 3. Family is most important. Keep your weekends for them. Let that fact be known. 4. However, if you do get offered heaps of $$$ to finish it by Monday, be pragmatic, and use the $$$ for a holiday in Fiji with the kids!!! Or shout your friends to a coffee!!<g> kind regards Gary [clipped] Hi guys. Just thought I would start one of those Friday discussions. As developers with many years of experience you must have had this come up many times. Scenario: You are a sole developer working your arse off to get your program finished and unexpected feature-less by D-day. Its the day before your software goes live. Your boss comes and tells you about changes to requirements which means quite a few changes to your database structure and software code. Its still the day before your software goes live. There is still only one of you. Im looking forward to learning your techniques for handling these situations. And HAVE A GREAT FRIDAY & WEEKEND Cheers Tracey | To : [EMAIL PROTECTED] | CC : | From: tracey, [EMAIL PROTECTED] | Content Type: text/html | Attached: | | _______________________________________________ | Offtopic mailing list | [EMAIL PROTECTED] | http://ns3.123.co.nz/mailman/listinfo/offtopic | <DIV style="WIDTH: 260px; HEIGHT: 50px"><MARQUEE id=marquee1 style="WIDTH: 260px; HEIGHT: 200px" trueSpeed scrollAmount=5 scrollDelay=20 direction=right behavior=slide loop=1 border="2"><hr><table><tr><td><FONT color=black size=4 face = "helvetica, verdana, arial">Gary Benner </FONT></td></tr><tr><td><FONT face="arial, arial, helvetica, sans-serif" color=black size=2>e-Engineer, Lecturer, and Software Developer</FONT></td></tr> <tr><td bgcolor=><FONT face="arial, arial, helvetica, sans-serif" color=#000099 size=2><B><A HREF="http://www.123.co.nz" style="text-decoration:none; color:blue">123 Internet Limited</A></B></FONT></td></tr><tr><td bgcolor=><FONT face="arial, arial, helvetica, sans-serif" color=#000099 size=2><B><A HREF="http://www.waiariki.ac.nz" style="text-decoration:none; color:#993333">Waiariki Institute of Technology</A></B></FONT></td></tr><tr><td bgcolor=><FONT face="arial, arial, helvetica, sans-serif" color=#CECE00 size=2><B><A HREF="http://www.sunshinebags.co.nz" style="text-decoration:none; color:#CECE00">Sunshine Garden Bag Co.</A></B></FONT></td></tr><tr><td bgcolor=><FONT face="arial, arial, helvetica, sans-serif" color=red size=2><B><A HREF="http://www.sommnet.com" style="text-decoration:none; color:red" >Sommnet.com Limited</A></B></FONT></td></tr><tr><td><font face = "helvetica, verdana, arial" size = 1>Mob: 021 966 992</font></td></tr><tr><td><font face = "helvetica, verdana,! arial" size = 1>Email: <A href="mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]" >[EMAIL PROTECTED]</A> </font></td></tr></table></MARQUEE></DIV> _______________________________________________ Offtopic mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://ns3.123.co.nz/mailman/listinfo/offtopic
