Thats was precisely the point of the "5th seat" on the CAB, a neutral 3rd party individual would was experienced and successful in the Open Source/Free Software movement. You might recall a time when people lobbied for Linus Torvalds or Eric Raymond to fill that seat. This isn't to say that Dr. Fielding is unexperienced with Solaris, look at Apache and its history and you'll see the proof of his expertise. I can not and will not abide bashing of Dr. Fielding. He wrote the Constitution by himself because the CAB couldn't get it done (I was on the working group assisting the CAB so I'm to blame with everyone else). He brought his wealth of experience from the ASF and other endeavors to our fledgling community and he deserves nothing but praise for his efforts, time, and commitment. The community had ample opportunity to contribute or reject the Constitution and it did not. The shortcoming is not in his efforts but the rest of the community that has repeatedly shown utter disregard for the bylaws he drafted. Dr. Fielding deserves the respect and honor of this community regardless of how you feel about our current situation. If it were not for his work I guarantee you we'd still be trying to write a constitution today. benr.
