Yep, Sara's on point.

To me, this all comes down to the question: Is OpenSolaris just the
code base, or is it an operating system you can download and run?

I'm pretty clearly of the latter viewpoint. To me, that's part
and parcel of removing barriers to adoption--much of the broader
community we need to reach already thinks of it as such. And regular
releases in binary form serve as a great delivery vehicle for our
technology, roadmap around which to align new feature development, etc.
Even in open source, it's the binary platform that matters most..

That's not to say there can't be multiple distributions--Nexenta etc.
can keep doing things just the way they've been doing them. If
anything, we're hoping to find ways to enable others to build
distributions that are more closely affiliated with OpenSolaris,
hence the "Built on OpenSolaris" part of the naming proposal.
OpenSolaris as product family, as others have put it. But as that
product family grows, we need to ensure the brand OpenSolaris
continues to mean something, particularly given the Linux
experience and Solaris' long history of binary compatibility.

None of these issues are intractable. I'm confident we'll collectively
come up with something that works.
