Happy New Year everybody (boy it's great to be back in touch with the world
again, after 10 days without the 'net).
Over the holiday I picked up the Star Wars book not so much because I wanted
to play the game, but rather to see how much variation there is between two
'official' d20 systems. I found a few gems that I want to carry into the
D&D world, and was wondering if anyone else was working on these problems.
The rules clearly need some adaptations to 'feel like D&D', but I think it
can be done in a way that makes it a piece of cake for someone to move from
one game to the other.
The first was the Wound Point/Vitality Point system. To me, these concepts
make a LOT more sense than Hit Points. I've written a conversion for them
that fits almost seamlessly into D&D (no change in total HP for any
monster).
The second one I wanted to tackle was the magic system, using some concepts
borrowed from 'Force' feats and also put forth in 'Craft of the Mind'. I'm
thinking of a much-reduced (and more general) selection of Spells in the
form of Feats and/or Skills rather than as separate entities. If anyone is
working on this sort of thing I'd love to talk about it off-list.
Finally, I'm toying around with the ship combat system and considering
porting it to medieval sailing ships. I don't like the abstract ship
placement system, and though I prefer hexes I'd be willing to stay on a grid
for the sake of consistency. If anyone is working on this sort of thing I'd
love to talk about them off-list.
