Did it? Or was it the fact that the new rules were actually good (for
the most part), bringing back many of the gamers alienated by the
awfulness of 2nd edition or stolen away by more modern gaming systems?
I've heard very little praise of the artwork in 3E, and much
complaining (especially about the elf ears, and the lack of texturing
used by some artists). In fact, the gritty style is nothing new -
Warhammer Fantasy Role Playing did it 10 years ago (as did various
Cyberpunk RPGs). And most gamers I know absolutely despise Kender.
