Greetings,
I want the OGL to work just as much as everyone else, and I want all
of the creators who participate in it to succeed, but IMO the current OGL is
confusing, contradictory, complicated, user unfriendly, too narrow minded in
some places yet too broad in others. I cite the previous comments of the
list about the OGL as proof for my assertions, but if necessary I will take
the time to be more explicit.
Regardless, I don't like to complain without also suggesting a solution.
So, here's my solution: Why don't we write the OGL ourselves and THEN let a
lawyer or ten look over it for problems? Not to sound plebeian, but having
Wizards write and control the OGL is sort of like having England write the US
constitution. I'm also not trying to be ungrateful here ... but who better
to write the OGL than the people who plan to use it... ALL the people who
plan to use it. That way we KNOW that everyone will understand it.
Is that even an option? If not, it should be. Or is that what we are
supposed to be doing on this list? It's just not clear. The biggest
obstacle to list member input (and therefore complete success of the OGL),
IMO is all of the complicated language. All of us are gamers, but only a
small few are experienced businessmen and lawyers. The OGL is intimidating
and confusing, and that's a shame. Normally, I would say "Too bad, educate
yourself and grow up." But this is a document for gamers who want to
contribute OGC, NOT for lawyers and businessmen who also happen to be gamers.
Just my 2 cents.
Maggie
