So, you want to play in WOTCs yard but you don't want to play by their
rules?
This is starting to look like people are ONLY interested in making their
bucks but not actually participating in the open gaming concept.

1. This isnt Linux. I wish the computer guys would get
off that example. If Windows was open that would be a
relevant comparison. Linux is hardly a good analogy
for "the world's most popular roleplaying game."
2. Being WotC and being any other third party
distributor also are two different things. You dont
need third party supplements to play the game. And
just because WotC is willing to risk that the net will
publish the d20 SRD (and thus the PHB) doesnt mean I
need to accept that risk. Plus, a person has more
incentive to have the "real" version of the D&D rules
and less incentive to need the "real" version of the
CC or any of my modules.
This is a real problem that needs to be addressed. "It
doesnt bother WotC so it shouldnt bother you" is
hardly a sufficient response. WotC is a huge company
that can afford piracy to some degree. Like CDs and
VHS tapes and game CDs. That cost can be built in. I
cant be sure I will sell enough product before piracy
takes over. Plus, if D&D3E fails, it wont sink WotC or
Hasbro. If some internet pirate posts all my stuff I
wont make it.
