Every one of its monsters was created in a copyrighted work, so none 
would be public domain. You could create your own version of a lot of 
D&D monsters based on public domain material that predates the game. 
Others that are unique to D&D have been discussed at great length 
here -- look for "mind flayer" as a subject in the archives.

Which monsters have been removed entirely from the SRD?
