In this case I wouldn't consider the patches trivial. I recall vaguely someone mentioning that for the FSF three lines of code were not copyrightable. These were big changes but still they were not copyrightable. In any case I surely agree, the correct thing to do is ask first and in general respect people's opinions. Pedro.
