No, that's our internal build number.

If the 6.5.1 update doesn't work, take a look at this bug report:

It describes the fix to vmware-user.desktop which should fix the problem you're 
having.

As far as code goes, I think both are the same (if not, the differences should 
be pretty small), ignoring any differences regarding which internal VMware 
branch the code comes from.

The reason why the version that comes with Workstation is much larger is that 
it 
comes with lots of pre-compiled modules for a vast list of kernels, and it also 
contains pre-compiled versions of the user-level applications (and needed 
libraries like gtk+ and glib). The open-vm-tools package just contains the 
VMware Tools source code.
