As far as code goes, I think both are the same (if not, the differences should be pretty small), ignoring any differences regarding which internal VMware branch the code comes from. The reason why the version that comes with Workstation is much larger is that it comes with lots of pre-compiled modules for a vast list of kernels, and it also contains pre-compiled versions of the user-level applications (and needed libraries like gtk+ and glib).
