Amusing, I hoped I replyed to this one right... *smiles*
> If the 6.5.1 update doesn't work [...]
I seem to have failed -_-. The Offical VMware tooles with 6.5.1 didn't work
for me either.
My product is "VMware Workstation 6.5.1 build-126130".
The Offical VMware tools filename I installed was
"VMwareTools-7.8.4-126130.tar.gz". The Kubuntu image I'm installing is
"kubuntu-8.10-desktop-i386.iso" and the MD5 matches the offical.
After a completely brand new Kubuntu 8.10 install, I boot up and click the
"Install Tools" button. I open up Konsole (X-Terminal) and go
cd /tmp
cp /media/cdrom0/VMwareTools-7.8.4-126130.tar.gz . ((I then
Right-Click and Eject the Virtual CD))
tar xf VMwareTools-7.8.4-126130.tar.gz
cd vmware-tools-distrib
sudo ./vmware-install.pl
After it takes a few mins it ask's if I want to call the vmware configuration
script and I say yes. It says it needs to build based on my linux's headers
and I said yes. They build; "__ loads into the kernel perfectly" except
"vsock" which gives an error and fails. At this point I try upgrading my
system (because I notice it does update linux headers), and it still does the
same. I choose default for all options.
I then call the "vmware-uninstall.pl" and I remove the 3 or 4 VMWare folders in
the "/tmp" folder and download "open-vm-tools-2008.11.18-130226.tar.gz" and put
it in the "/tmp" directory and call the following
tar xf open-vm-tools-2008.11.18-130226.tar.gz
cd open-vm-tools
./configure --without-x --without-d*** --without-***
make
make install
The "./configure" stops a couple times forcing me to do the "--without-" three
times. After the "make install" I reboot the system and do a "lsmod | grep vm"
and only the "vmxnet" shows in the list. A few questions:
Q1. Does the "--without-XXX" stop moduals from getting installed? Is this the
reasion why only "vmxnet" shows up? Some of the without's seemed to be website
specific packages (aka ones I couldn't get with "apt-get install XXX")?
Q2. Is there something I need to do after the "make install" other than
restarting my machine?
I only read the begining bit on the INSTALL text that comes with OpenTools
(this, and the README, are pretty big). I'll try to read the rest of it but
thought maybe it'd be faster if I ask here. Sorry for the vagness on the "***"
items, I didn't record them when I went though it. Thanks
