Hmmm, that should probably be changed. The perl-based installer has never been
part of open-vm-tools, and "make install" is pretty functional these days. It
should copy all files to the right locations, it just won't change your system's
configuration (like setting up init scripts and things like that).

Dominique (who handles the opensuse packages if I'm not mistaken) has provided
an init script for open-vm-tools but I haven't had time to look at integrating
it yet. (It doesn't help that each distro has a slightly different API that init
scripts can use...)

Why exactly are you trying to install open-vm-tools instead of using the version
of Tools shipping with your VMware product? If the latter is not working for
some reason, then you should probably file a support request with VMware (or
post a message in the forums, we have a few people who monitor those and can
help with the most common issues).

We generally see open-vm-tools as targeted at distro packagers, not end-users.
