If we can get BlazeDS to work with Flex and OpenBD, that should satisfy a huge percentage of we "few people" who need to implement binary data transfer with a Flex/ActionScript desktop or web app (along with all the mobile device apps that one can produce - using their Flex/ActionScript code).
