Yes, it was definitely a theory based only on correlation. 

I have nothing else but these facts 

We generate 300 CFMAIL requests every 2 minutes
@ 1 thread: spool backs up, log fills with errors mentioned below.
Possible corollary of some target accounts getting more that one message
- seconds apart.
@ 4 threads: spool is nicely flushed with 10~20 seconds to spare each
time, no more errors. 

So I pulled that "locking" theory out of my ear (a better choice of
3-letter body part for a public group), and my persistent childish
curiosity yearns for a more thoughtful one.
