I know this is dredging up an issue that is about 5 years old, but I 
believe I ran into the same problem and have attached a short example that 
demonstrates the bug. 

I was able to get around the issue by converting the original GIF to PNG 
and removing the ColorSync profile using 
the /Library/Scripts/ColorSync/Remove script on my Mac. Just converting it 
to PNG apparently wasn't enough.
