There have been an obscene amount of fixes and improvements in the USB 
system (including umass) in the almost 5 years since 3.4.  Not to 
mention all of the other improvements.  In the soon-to-be-released 4.3, 
there have been a number of improvements specifically aimed at CF cards 
and CF readers, including reliability and speed.
