FYI, Chikai Ohazama of SGI wrote such a module for DX 3.1.4B, which he
demonstrated at SC98 in November 1998 in Orlando on a 16-way Onyx with
multiple IRE pipes.

Of course, to use Volumizer the data have to be on a regular grid or on a
low-enough-resolution irregular grid that you can resample to regular grid
at high-enough-resolution to capture the content...

Have you tried volume rendering?
Its not hard to write a DX module that uses
the SGI Volumizer API to render large data sets
(512^3) in real time on a single pipe.
