This is pretty far off-topic here but if the only reason you are setting up openfiler is for backups, perhaps you could use something like backuppc (http://backuppc.sourceforge.net/) and not have to re-invent so much. Unfortunately there is a long standing bug in the Cygwin sshd/rsync combination so you can't simply configure it to use rsync over ssh (but what was that bitwise ssh version you mentioned?).
