I'm having basic comprehension issues with the ipmitool (as
shipped with Debian stable). I'm running debian amd64 on a Sun
Fire X2100, with latest

ipmitool - utility for IPMI control with kernel driver or LAN interface
libopenipmi-dev - Intelligent Platform Management Interface - development
libopenipmi0 - Intelligent Platform Management Interface - runtime
openipmi - Intelligent Platform Management Interface (for servers)

installed. My SMDC (IPMI 1.5, a Tyan card) listens on 10.0.0.7
(set up with the DOS tools Sun shipes). I don't have an ipmi-capable
kernel on that machine, so my only option is to connect to it from
another machine. Console redirection to IPMI is set in the (upgraded)
BIOS. nmap 10.0.0.7 tells me

PORT STATE SERVICE
23/tcp open telnet
MAC Address: 00:E0:81:34:A8:B4 (Tyan Computer)

Trying telnet 10.0.0.7 gives me
Trying 10.0.0.7...
Connected to 10.0.0.7.
Escape character is '^]'.
Connection closed by foreign host.

Which ipmitool syntax do I need to connect to the SMDC from
another machine on the same LAN?

When I'm trying ipmitool -H 10.0.0.7 lan -P ******** print
I'm getting

Activate Session error: Requested privilege level exceeds limit
Error: Unable to establish LAN session
Get Channel Info command failed
Channel 7 (Unknown (0xff)) is not a LAN channel

Sorry for the dumb question, but this has me stymied for days.
I really need some minimal help to get started.
