I haven't subscribed to this list until just now, as it appears this is the forum for interaction on bug reports ...
I'd like to second Bill's suggestion to use 'id'. In day-to-day interactive use, I rarely use 'who' or 'whoami' to determine my current id; instead I use 'id' for accuracy (as shown in the inital bug submission). One caveat: under Solaris, /usr/xpg4/bin/id (rather than /usr/bin/id) is closer to Linux in terms of command line args supported.
