Why not?  Certainly OpenSolaris is not going to accept any random bit of
stuff that someone wants to contribute.  Some sort of review process is
needed, even for things that the community thinks are critical.

It's true that the review process for OpenSolaris is not yet
well-defined.  John Beck and folks are working on a proposal for that.

In the mean time, we can follow the same basic approach that we've
already used to take in fixes from the OpenSolaris community.  Someone
signs up to do the engineering work, and someone from Sun signs up to
sponsor the work and help the first person get through the existing Sun
review processes.

I don't see why this is an either/or situation.  That is, I think we can
have compatibility with older Solaris releases, and we can have
compatibility with the other OpenSolaris distros.  But it will take some
time and engineering work to get there.
