At a high level, the current Solaris distinction is:
SFW is the consolidation that's part of Solaris itself - much of it
is installed in /usr/sfw and other parts of Solaris can depend on it.
Companion is the optional add-on that installs in /opt/sfw and which
nothing in Solaris can depend on.
How this evolves in OpenSolaris is an open questions for these projects
to discuss in their forums.
