Careful there -- it is the way the HP-UX freeware community took. Eventually 
they had to give up and scrap the whole thing because they ended up with a PATH 
mess -- one /opt/something/ PATH for every piece of software!

But I do agree with you, by all means, /opt is the right place.  Namely, 
/opt/sfw/.  Put everything under one PATH and deliver *an entire* software 
stack under it.  After all, that's what packages are for, so that stuff can be 
added and removed and kept track of... whether they are under the same 
directory or not makes no difference since the OS keeps track of it, but it 
makes a *huge difference* for maintaining the system PATH.
