I wouldn't be so quick to write that. As far as I know, Adobe has released the 
specs for the PDF format, which is how tools like `xpdf` and `evince` came to 
be.

Since these specs are available to anyone, technically speaking, Adobe is not 
obligated to provide a reader for every platform, since other parties are free 
to develop one. That's what *open standards* are all about.

As much as I dislike Adobe for not providing a reader for my favorite platform 
for the format they invented, I have to be objective: Adobe does not have to do 
that in order to be able to claim that they invented a portable document format.

As soon as specs are released, they become open standard, portable format. At 
that point, it's game over, and they can indeed claim to have invented a 
portable document format.
