If you are seeing speed issues where you think there shouldn't be you can always file a bug. Since the initial release of 2008.05 i've noticed significant improvements in IPS and the package manager GUI.
If you are going to the effort of compiling all of your software why not make the extra effort to make either a SVR4 or IPS package so that others don't have to duplicate the effort.
