The output of format shows disks, not partitions.
Run:
fdisk /dev/rdsk/c8d0p0
You should see the defined partitions there. The first partition maps
to: /dev/rdsk/c8d0p1, the second to p2, etc.

All this happens. And only one partition shows up?! This isn't making sense.
Now, upon ls /dev/dsk, assuming OpenSolaris' 'slices' were here, I get (as I
described earlier) these, which I'm not going to try to mount individually:

The partition IS there--OpenSolaris just isn't picking it up as
external/removable or internal after the OpenSolaris installation replacing the
customized Linux install I had previously had running. I learned of
OpenSolaris, and two days ago decided to give it a shot over Linux. I'm
proficient with Linux, just not completely with OpenSolaris yet. The underlying
system works differently, apparently... I thought the two were near the same.
Through all this, I imagine I'm making myself out to be a moron at computing,
as far as Solaris goes anyway. However,
-- Before the install:
/dev/sda1 was the primary partition (where Linux was installed).
/dev/sda5 was the secondary underneath a configuration where /dev/sda2 was
above sda5 using the parted utility under Linux.
-- During the install I chose to install Solaris on my first partition, which
should have been sda1. sda5 I made absolutely sure was untouched by the
installer at least. Any background commands that could have affected it?
-- After the install: Following this, I tried the Linux line 'mount -t vfat
/dev/sda5 /mnt/mydisk' when I saw sda5 did not exist as 'mounted' in GNOME.
(Please note: mydisk was a directory I made for it to mount to.) It could not
mount the disk, and that is where I read posts online about OpenSolaris
realizing I was a Solaris newbie, typing in ls /dev/dsk only to find an array
of IDs or nodes or something of the like there..... That is where I came here
for assistance.
I have about 7.2 GB of my stuff in here, and it DID and I hope still DOES
exist! Otherwise, I might wind up running Linux on a live end to try and find
it. At this point, I'm honestly and crazily wondering if OpenSolaris disposed
of my partition if it can't find it on its maps.
Hope this isn't being a headache or scaring people off, and I **really**
appreciate your assistance so far. It is helping having a little Solaris
knowledge now. Any ideas relevant to a Linux guy's understanding?
