I'm sorry we've taken so much of your bandwidth. We're still ironing out the kinks in this, and obviously we still have a ways to go. We do now have a download cache which should at least prevent you from downloading bits you've already downloaded every time you re-try the same operation.
You filed a bug on b.o.o. (6734392 pkg image-update needs resume capability) which may or may not be satisfied by the download cache feature. If it is, let me know, and I'll close it.
