OK I tried again, this time I reinstalled opensloaris from the 2008.05 live CD, it boot and reboot fine. I backup the /platform/i86pc/amd64/boot_achive and the /platform/i86pc/ucode/GenuineIntel/* directory. I then used the package manager to install the SUNWgcc, gcc-dev, SUNWgccruntime and SUNWtoo packages. The download went fine and the packages installed, I could use the gcc command at the prompt.
The boot_achive file and GenuineIntel directory still existed and then I rebooted, there was an error as the system shutdown, a module could not be found ? can?t remember exactly what it said. When I restarted the system, boot failed. I boot up off the live CD and copied the backup the missing boot_achive file and GenuineIntel directory, it still didn?t help the system boot. I?m all out of ideas, so I guess I either get a copy of Solaris 10 or wait until opensolaris 2008.11. Oh programming is such fun - isn?t it?
