I will try what you have said.  For now I have some more information.

I believe the USB side of things is failing.  Both mouse and keyboard are usb 
devices, hence no use input is possible.  A remote session continues to 
function just fine.  'prtconf' shows all the usb devices present, including a 
"storage instance" and a "disk instance".  Subsequent removal and reattachment 
of the disk (and other usb devices) appears to be correctly recognised - i.e. 
'prtconf' reports all the devices correctly. 

Is there a way to cycle the usb driver without rebooting the computer?

Disabling the screensaver seems to have stopped the rebooting.

One other note for other Mac Mini based users, don't change the gnome, 
appearance, visual effects setting.  I changed it from "none" to "normal", 
everything looked ok - at least initially, but many controls/items were not 
being rendered, in particular text.   Clearing gnomes settings with "rm -rf 
.gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity" fixes things, but you need to be able 
to get to a terminal to do that!
