Ok, after I've not established the project environment for us, I've now spent
two days in front of Photoshop and WML and created the (hopefully) final
website. The major goals were:
1. All pages are generated out of a single template file and
this way produce a consistent look and feel over the whole website. After
we've finally comitted the website to CVS' openssl-web/ sub-repository one
can edit it with any text-editor without fiddling around with layout or
design aspects.
2. All pages are 100% stand-alone, i.e. all frames are gone, while the general
layout still looks a little bit framed ;-) This way our users can bookmark
the pages and no frame support is needed in the browser.
3. All image tags contain pre-calculated width/height attributes
to speed up loading and rendering.
4. The technical details of the used webdesign or not trivial, but
still very portable. This way we don't bother the majority of users while
we still produce some "Ohh.. nice" at the more advanced readers. That's
important because a good product needs also an attractive environment.
5. The website consistently uses an orthogonal two-level navigation
system. On the left you can choose the area, on the top you can choose the
page (inside the selected area). Those who're familiar with my
www.engelschall.com/sw/xxx/ pages (e.g. mod_ssl) already know this
navigation system.
6. The used webdesign produces both nice display in GUI-browsers
like Netscape 4.x _AND_ very clean display in Lynx 2.7.x at the same time
and without content negotiation or other tricks on the server. Even the
navigation buttons are fully functional in Lynx.
7. The complete website uses _ONLY_ relative hyperlinks, even
for the inlined images. This way you can display it under any location
(later directly out of the local CVS tree).
I've also filled most of the pages with real contents. So, please check it
out. It's _OUR_ face to the public, so we _ALL_ should like it. When you
dislike something please complain and I'll try to enhance or fix it or at
least try to argument why it is the way it is.
Greetings,
Ralf S. Engelschall
