ca+ssl-dev> which are changing all the time. That should be /var.  *BSD and
ca+ssl-dev> Solaris seem to have /var/run (at least my boxes do), so that might
ca+ssl-dev> be a good candidate.

Your Solaris boxes must be a bit special.  I've looked at a number of
SunOS 5.6 and SunOS 5.7 sparcs now, none of them having a /var/run...
Then, let's not forget other Unix-like OSes, say AIX (I just checked a
AIX 4.3 system), and there are certainly more that I'm not checking
right now.

However, if we so choose, would it be really bad to simply create a
/var/run if not present when installing prngd?  Another variant would
be to have it configured in some "standard" file, perhaps
/etc/egd.conf or /etc/prngd.conf?

Personally, I still see nothing wrong with having that socket name in
/etc/...
