About X.500, that seems to be incorrect. I just looked through X.501
(which describes the directory models), and the few examples that
exist in chapter 9 (Names) and Annex H (Name Design Criteria) indicate
that the RDNs should be separated by ',' rather than prefixed with
'/'.
IIRC, the '/' convention is from X.400 addresses. Why it's used in
OpenSSL (as a renmant from SSLeay) is beyond me.
