I have an HP notebook running the boxed set openSUSE 10.0

I would like to upgrade the kernel *only* (modules, etc) without reinstalling
openSUSE. Can this be done easily?

openSUSE 10.0 was to be discontinued this last November, there will be no more updates. After the last update and the official announcement (which has not been published yet, AFAIK), you are on your own if you still want to maintain it.

Aside from that, of course you can update the kernel, using the customary YOU procedure - but not for long with that distro version.
