I just opened a 4.7GB file to try (a DVD image). No problem!
Did you try "view" (F3) or "edit" (F4)? Use "view".
I did Edit.
Now I tried with "view" and got full screen of dots - and nothing else?!?
Ok, try "hex mode", F4 inside "view". You will get something like this:

If the hex part doesn't correspond to a printable letter, it is displayed
as a dot, like in the example above.
It is not a good sign for a mailbox... must be broken, or it is not in
tuhnderbird mail box format. Some binary format, like one of those used by
outlook...
