Here are my EUR 0.02. I'm project leader now, and
somehow involved in hiring process ( well, I do not
like to know what our HR would hire without asking me
:) ) - 
it's me who has to demand work from people. 

So of course our HR looks for impressive resumes, but
it's me who weeds out. 

And the last part of resume I'm interested is formal
education. I was myself at the university and I know
the edication level :) If somebody can show me the
code  - fine. Even better he is committer in some
opensource project I'm interested with. 

After all, software development is 50/50 of
engineering 
and craft - and without craftsmen who write code
engineers would get problems.
