Seems as, for the es_ES.UTF-8 locale, it reads the strings from the
file /usr/share/locale-langpack/es/LC_MESSAGES/nagios-plugins.mo which
belongs to the package language-pack-es-base. This is the result:

In the Ubuntu 10.04 version they changed the translation to a string without
the | symbol. Now it's corrected:
