Seems as, for the es_ES.UTF-8 locale, it reads the strings from the file /usr/share/locale-langpack/es/LC_MESSAGES/nagios-plugins.mo which belongs to the package language-pack-es-base. This is the result:

r...@opsview:~# LANG=es_ES.UTF-8 /usr/local/nagios/libexec/ check_http -H 192.168.218.1 2>&1 HTTP OK: HTTP/1.1 200 OK - 606 bytes en 0,002 segundo tiempo de respuesta time=0,002110s;;;0,000000size=606B;;;0

In the Ubuntu 10.04 version they changed the translation to a string without the | symbol. Now it's corrected:

https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/lucid/+source/nagios-plugins/+pots/nagios-plugins/es/247/+translate

That's bad programming - the string to translate should not be constructed in such a way that a translation breaks functionality. I'll have a look over these with my plugins hat on at some time.
