Forums are an interactive tool, requires you to personally visit it on a regular basis. Its very labor intensive and buys nothing for the skilled and seasoned teams. Posts can be removed, filtered, censored, etc. When the forums are down, we can not look at anything and as a person that has run some very large scale forums, its not an if, its a when will the forum go down. Mailing lists, the mail in my mailbox, I can search it and still find information when need no matter what.
Other thing with forums, you want to watch something, you have to subscribe to each and every thread, so you can achieve what the email list gives automatically .......
Just my rant on the subject, nothing personal. Cheers, Roberto--On June 15, 2010 7:40:42 AM -0500 Ryan Goldberg <[email protected]> wrote:
I'll put in for mailing lists too. I used to think it was just old-school preference, but is indeed less resource intensive. We are in favor of email lists. Forums are a pain and takes resources to monitor them, email has automation tools and in our environment is simple, effective and fast. We are favor of keeping the list operational. The archives will still be available but new threads should be posted to our mailing lists: http://www.opsview.com/community/forum On that basis I encourage everyone to adopt the new forums as your preferred place to ask questions. There is even a thread for posting suggestions on how they can be improved, so please let us know! -- James-- -------------------------------- Roberto R.
